Would someone know of a store along Nassau's south shore (Merrick - Massapequa or thereabouts) that stocks packages of loose tea? The supermarkets seem to sell only tea bags. Thanks.

Try Salumi Café & Market. They sell specialty items next door that is part of the restaurant which is very good! It is in East Massapequa on Merrick Road.

You can also order loose tea directly from www.twiningsusa.com. They sell different varieties of loose tea in tins (directly to the consumer).

Black - Twinings Tea US

This is a link to their black teas.

Any health food store would have them as well. Alvita is a good brand.

For store purchases, Teavana, David's Tea, Fairway. David's Tea and Teavana always have free samples.

For online purchases, there are dozens and dozens. Some of my favorites are Republic of Tea, Enjoying Tea, The Art of Tea, English Tea Store. It depends on your preferences. I only drink loose leaf tea and I drink a lot of it.

Teavana and David's are very overpriced.

Beware Teavana. I have used and do like their product, but you need to be mindful of their tactics.

They do offer samples in the store. What they don't tell you is that these samples are often brewed 2x or 3x the standard strength and laced with enough sugar to incite a diabetic coma. You taste it in the store and think "this is great." Then you brew it at home and can't understand why it tastes nothing like the store. When you go back, they try to upset you - more tea, special sugar, etc. In the end, you are drinking a $5 cup of tea.

Again, they have some good product. Just don't be fooled by their samples, and be prepared to pay a premium price. The use the Starbucks model - take a hot beverage everyone else sells for 99 cents, put it in a hipster store and charge $5.

I have had some luck with "EnglishTeaStore.com" and Adagio.com. There are many others online. Most sell inexpensive sample packs so you can find a variety you like. Online is the best source once you know what you like.

Those teas are pretty expensive - they get about $50 per tin
