Sure.
If you have a pipe cleaner with a good cutting tip, or you hire a company to do it.

Yes. the plumber did that. But he said that the roots might grow again and that I have to call him every 6 months.

That's possible. See if you can determine where along the pipe the roots were and eliminate the vegetation that is causing it. Or wait and see, it may be years before you have another problem if the job was done correctly.

Have an experienced sewer company snake out the line with a good cutting blade. Followup every 6-12 months. Otherwise replace the line.

replacing the line would be 7k - 10k in cost. Is that correct?

You haven't mentioned if this is a frequent problem or the first time in years, we had this in our first home, a very large oak tree's roots would invade our cast iron sewer line about every 2 years but you have several options
1) remove the tree causing it if you know which one it is.
2) replace the sewer line with PVC
3) Use a commercial product like RootX or Root kill (available at big box stores) once a year to keep the roots at bay.

We ended up moving but if we had stayed I would have been more diligent to use a root killing product because our line was sound.

Ugh. Went through this a few years back. Had the roots cut out a few times then used root x. It helped for several years then had to get it rooted again, this time though the old pipe broke forcing me to get a new one. Glad I did though as I never have to worry about backups due to roots again. Cost me around $5000. Estimates were as high as $7 grand but 10 would be way high. If your pipe is in good shape though make sure you stay on top of using the Root X.
