My wife and I , currently living in Jersey City, are looking to move to the suburbs. We both work in Manhattan (mid-town area) and love our short commute to work (30 mins door to door). As our kid gets older (he is almost 3 years now), we have to start thinking about schools. A good private school is very expensive in our area, so we want to move to an area of the suburbs with top-notch public schools and want to keep our door to door commute to an hour. So far , based on short commute times and good school districts, we have narrowed down to: Millburn/Shorthills and Great Neck. Any other towns we should be considering ?
I have filled the template with all the information below:
Where are you coming from?
Jersey City, NJ
Why are you moving?
Looking to move to an area with great public school
Where will you be working ? If NYC, what part of NYC?
Mid-town . Wife works near hudson yards and I work near grand central
Will you buy or rent? Buy
What is your budget ? $1 million
What kind of place are you looking for ? Nothing fancy. 3 bed , 2bed condo or townhouse. My wife and I don't want to own a big house (its too much of a hassle to maintain).
Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ? wife and 3 year old son.
Do you need/want good public schools? Absolutely
Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in
(examples: families with young children, young, mature, artsy, diverse, safe, close-knit, block parties, etc)
A diverse neighborhood (with mixed ethnic backgrounds), should have families with young children and it should have a nice dowtown.
List three things that are important to you in order of importance.(examples: nightlife, outdoor activities, rural/urban, safety, downtown area, charming, new construction, proximity to XYZ, family oriented, easy parking, short commute, etc)
short commute, safe neighborhood, accessible to highway.
Well, you aren't going to get anything on Long Island 30 minutes door to door. How long are you willing to commut?. Keep in mind that Great Neck is becoming a predominantly Asian area with some Persian and Orthodox Jews in the mix. Nothing in Westchester interests you? Even if you are close to a highway on Long Island, you still have to deal with bridges, tunnels and tolls to get off of it.
Great Neck , Manhasset, Port Washington fits the bill, since they have short LIRR commute as others mentioned.
Just be prepared to be shocked at how little house you can get for 1 Million dollar in those towns.
I had a similar budget during my house hunt, and ending up slightly east in Roslyn/East Hills as you can get more house for a million bucks (but taxes are more) and similiarly good school district. I work in LI, so commuting was not an issue.

We want to keep our commute an hour door to door ( great neck train is 25-30 mins into Penn) . I haven't done much research into the Westchester area, but I am all ears if you know of an area that fits our criteria.
You won't get anything decent in Manhasset for 1 million.
Maybe Garden City, although not diverse (Asians starting to move in though) - better commute because you have a couple of train lines. DH commuted on both PW and from GC and preferred GC because if you miss a train on the PW line you are stuck for an hour. With GC just go to Jamaica and go from there.
I am intolerant of people who are intolerant of other people that are not of their race. There are a whole lot of intolerant and unwelcoming people in Great Neck. The Orthodox and Persians are just some of the worst kind of people I've ever met. I've never met more manipulative and racist people in my life. They look down upon everyone that is not of the same race. If you move to Great Neck, this is the kind of scum you will have to deal with on a daily basis. Just be aware.
if you miss a train on the PW line you are stuck for an hour.
False. In the evenings trains run on the PW line to Great Neck and points east every 20-30 mins or so until midnight.
