What was your impression of the Vegas suburbs? Just curious if you had completed any research on the schools, the sense of the community (was it too transient?), etc...
States not for me:
Florida - too hot
Texas - this is only based on a half dozen business trips, but I did not enjoy the Houston and/or Fort Worth areas that I visited. Limited exposure though.
AZ - see Florida (I stepped off the plane in July and my eyeballs were sweating)
Otherwise, who knows where life might lead...
We researched moving to Nevada (Las Vegas) back before we bought our 1st house in Commack so 1995 I guess. At that time Vegas was the "it" place. We took a trip out there to look around/vacation. We visited in Jan so the temp was good. We visited a ton of houses. They were all REALLY nice, but you didn't get much land, we were told because it gets sooo hot most people spent time indoors. The schools were good at the time where we were looking(we also had no kids). Summerlin I think was the name of the area. We looked into hubby getting a transfer, but his company at the time would have cut his salary and at the time we could afford to buy on LI, it wasn't crazy expensive in 1995 - 1996. It was also VERY far from family and not really drivable. I am also not a big fan of exteme weather(hot or cold) and I do like change of season. I am glad I got to visit, research, and make a informed decision.
I'd use the characteristics of the inhabitants of the state to rule out moving there. For example, I would not move to an area where the general population does the following:
1. Start every sentence with Y'all
2. End every sentence with yep, or yup
3. Consider a tractor pull a cultural event
4. Have more toes than teeth

Reason: spelling

In a nutshell, I love the beach and fear most natural disasters. Please do not share stats and predictions about LI and tsunamis, etc. Thank you.
Those are my criteria to avoid as well.
