Hi Everyone,

I have a CapeCode with a metal main beam in the basement. The basement is unfinished, so everything is fully accessible. The foor joist run from front to middle metal/main beam then from there to the rear of the house. We had an engineer look at the slop and he found there is a 2inch drop to the metal.

His Exclamation is settling over the course of 60 years. His Advice was to sister the joist and shim it back into level. Ofcourse, this will require jacking up the joist and we may have cracks in the dry wall etc.

I am looking for a good, honest company in Long Island who have experience doing this kind of work (jacking up joist to level and sistering the joist).

Thanks!

Did the engineer (PE?) write a report with a written recommendation to repair? Something does not make sense to me.

Hello,

Thanks for replying. It would have been an additional $120 to get a written report. Since he mentioned that there is nothing to be worried about and provided his recommendation to jack the joist and shim it back level we didn't opt for the written report.

Also he mentioned that it would be second priority to do as our first priority would be to water proof the outside of our foundation. He said that we would need to dig a foot trench around the parameter of the house then water proof the concrete...

What doesn't make sense?

For $120, I would get a report written.

So it slopes to the foundation or to the metal girder?

2 inches over how many feet?

It slopes to the metal girder/main beam from the front and other side of the house it's from metal beam to the rear. His recommendation is it sister the beams and jack it up and shim them.

The rest we already had sistered since those beams shattered prior.
I believe it's 12ft length

Do you do inspection in Long Island? Valley stream area?
