You would have to be a bit careful in Farmingdale, IMO, based on your price range. I can't say I know too much about it...though, but I do know there are some iffy parts.

thanks everyone for your opinions, this is overwhelming, and I just want to make sure I'm making the right decision.

Glad2bhere.. I'm curious to see why you would stay away from east meadow and hicksville

If you like diversity, you may like them.

Areas like Seaford and Bethpage are very opposite of EM and Hicksville, in that they are very non diverse.

So that's up to you which sort of neighborhood you prefer.

To be honest, I'm looking for an area with good schools thats a nice middle class community. My wife and I wouldn't fit well in a neighborhood like Merrick or Hewlett. I was originally interested in Freeport because I grew up in there, but I feel that the schools and neighborhood have taken a drastic change for the worse.

I have close relatives in Lindenhurst. Lovely quiet street, nice neighborhood. They have been there 8 years and like it a lot. I'd look there myself, but it would be too much of a commute as my husband and I work too far west.

Levittown school district? I am in the process of buying a home in Wantagh in the Wantagh school district, and it was a bit more than $399.
