DH & I left LI four years ago. We didn't leave because we couldn't afford to live there anymore. We left because we wanted to live by the beach and we could not afford to live by the beach and retire on LI. We saw several homes in a beach community that were 800 - 1000 square feet that were in the $700K and up to start, really beach bungalows and we would have had to downsize by at least 1/3 and increased our taxes by a minimum of $4K. Or we could have stayed and simply retired. The beach was our drawer.

We moved to De. and live under 2 miles to the beach (by choice, too smart to buy closer after watching friends lose all to Sandy).
Now the reason for this post is because if you read in some of the De; threads the natives are complaining about the same things you are on LI. Too crowded, the tax advantages are shrinking, the area is so built up, not what it used to be, the influx of people moving here. While the taxes are nothing like LI, and there is no sales tax, the natives have seen certain tax advantages shrinking. For example, at 65 with three years of residency depending upon your school taxes up to $500 will be deducted from them. It use to be no residency requirement, now it is three years, there is a bill before the house to make it ten years and the governor has just suggested a decrease in the max amount across the board by $100. Still not a bad deal, but those who have enjoyed it for years are now being asked to receive less because they need to balance the budget.

I guess my point is the grass is always greener depending upon your point of reference.

Sounds like the DE version of STAR.
Kinda unfair. They should just make it so that it has to be your primary residence, and obviously a permanent DE resident.

Ohhh, notice they ALL come back in some way. Either visiting, moving back or posting on CitiData.
Most trying to recreate or justify their move.

No, we all don't. Sometimes a visit is just a visit.

That people visit a place to hang out a bit, chat, see the sights? That is pretty crazy and/or diabolical. Personally I don't care if someone stays or moves.

Some are just fascinated and rubbernecking.

LI "Government" is almost too fascinating not to watch. NYS in general.
How you people haven't revolted yet is beyond me.
