YOU TELL ME

How are low paying private sector jobs (many without pensions or even heathcare) going to pay for all these high paying public sector jobs (with outsized pensions and rich benefits)?

Why should a Policeman or a School Superintendent (who has less earnings potential than the policeman which is remarkable, or even higher than a Goldman employee) get a greater salary than most CEO's or entrepreneurs in a small business?

Why on earth would someone want to bring jobs to LI with all this cost overhead?

Why on earth would you want to buy into the kind of tax structure where you are at the holiday dinner table and you are the only person in private industry?

How is that economically possible or sustainable?

Why on earth would anyone but a fool buy the kool-aid of tax ridden corrupt and low quality of life Nassau County Real Estate?

The answer is SEE CHICAGO

YES, NYC jobs are inflating the income structure of Nassau. But that is not sustainable either.
FWIW Floridian teachers and cops are not unionized or are not unionized as strongly as they are in NYS. A cop where my parents live screwed up and was fired; no administrative leave or desk duty while the union fought it out for him. Imagine the money taxpayers would save if that could be done here?

Arguing about it is futile. The sanity train left the station a long time ago and there's nothing to do except leave.

There are police and teachers unions in FL. But they don't have anywhere near the collective bargaining power as unions do in NY.

Its not just Union vs No Union - it is gross mismanagement over 40 years by totally unaccountable-criminal politicians, and a cowed populace. The only way to fix it;

a Nassau County Bankruptcy; which the state would block
a constitutional convention to be voted on Nov 2017 to complete 2019; great opportunity for crime by political
folks move en masse <-happening to some extent now
massive decrease in property values <will happen, it is a mathematical certainty
taxes continue to rise beyond the point of refusal <that is happening now
people get wise and refuse this nonsense <-as you see in this thread, it is not going to happen.

Adios! If you don't live in a dump buyers will be lining up to take it off your hands because more people want to live on Long Island than those who want to leave. Maybe they just have more confidence in their ability to deal with what you see as overwhelming problems.

Then way do I read posts here that you need AT LEAST 200k +++++ to live here on L.I.?
If the job paid less then the laws of supply & demand would dictate when a pay raise is needed to maintain an adequate pool of candidates. As it stands now they are standing 3 deep for a chance to grab the brass ring and ride this cash cow all the way to a 5 star retirement....

What does being ripped off and taken advantage of more and more each passing year despite having sufficient funds have to do with confidence?

People who want to live on LI, myself included, have to weigh all the pros and cons because there is a quality of life issue that extends beyond what we pay - we are getting very little back for it while paying even more than the previous year. Despite having savings every year, we are here for quality of life first and foremost and it is never headed in the positive anymore. Can you honestly say otherwise? We work hard and pay into what - for others to get "rich" and that's about the extent of it. There is little to nothing in the way of improved infrastructure, amenities, or public services that are MODERN elsewhere. We are jealous of what other city/suburbs like Arlington are getting. They can do it on a much lower budget - this is a huge problem - being ripped off.

People who want to move here from other areas see the school reputations which is a huge driving factor but haven't learned what we have just yet. Sadly for honest and hard-working people, this means that the crooks will continue to have their way. It hardly says that LI is a great place to be.

Know-it-all, don't dismissively adios me. I don't use the schools, and pretty tired of paying through the nose for other people's education and lush retirement in Dixie.

You can stay behind and struggle with LI's problems. Have fun enriching the millionaire cops. Paying 4x the average national property tax is a sign of your confidence, and the more you happily overpay the more confident you are. I am sure you will enjoy more confidence in the future.

This is such a fantasy. Industry is fleeing and the only ones staying we have to subsidize with tax dollars (IDA). That isn't "confidence," it's decline. The ones lining up to get on LI used to be for the upgrade to a better way of life. Now it's because they are priced out of the city. LI is fortunate to have the density it does, but hates itself for it. If managed correctly we could be the next Arlington or Raleigh, but Nimbyville will never be developed properly. Too many layers of hacks. Too much tax. Too little leadership. No compromise. see: Nassau Hub.

Although, the OP's points about not enough private sector jobs to pay for the public sector jobs is valid and nearing a boiling point on LI. In fact, it is part of WHY Arlington, VA has done so well! All that money flowing through DC. So I retract that...let's be Raleigh, not Arlington!

One thing Long Island has going for it that many of these other areas don't is a huge overflowing city that continues to produce transplants decade after decade. As long as Westchester continues being more expensive, LI will do fine in desirable towns. The start to revamping Nassau is by electing Laura Curran for county executive.
