They seem to be few & far between, but having something like that nearby is important to me. What are some towns (or hamlets or whatever) that have town centers where there are at least some cute restaurants, shops, a place to go for coffee, etc?

Northport, Huntington and Babylon were all great to hang out on.

I used to love Babylon Village -- my first apartment was over a florist on DPA in the village.

Don't forget Sayville.

Port Jeff Village has become a tourist tchotchke town. Maybe I live too close to it to appreciate it -- I don't know.

I feel the same way! Still do like Port Jeff solely for the looks, but going there for a night out? I'll pass!

The ones already mentioned are the best examples, there are others but sometimes they're hard to see. Patchogue and Bay Shore have the vibe and are up and coming but went through some rough years, Bellmore has a small but nice (and useful) Main Street, Wantagh has bars, coffee shops and restaurants by the train station, Glen Cove, Bayville and Sea Cliff in north shore Nassau....places like Great Neck and Garden City have them but are more spread out. Long Beach is one big Main Street....

Personally I wish there were more places like that. Maybe as gas prices go up and people realize how awful it is to go to the mall we'll see a comeback

Good call, I always forget about Oyster Bay but that's another winner. I need to make it up there more often.

No one ever comes out east!

South Fork:
Sag Harbor
Amagansett
East Hampton
Bridgehampton
Southampton (small Main St area but large town)

South Shore:
Hampton Bays
Quogue
Westhampton Beach

North Fork:
Greenport
Jamesport

There are others, and more to say about each, if you did want to come out this way.

My vote is for Northport. In the summer months it is great to stroll down main street, drop in for a drink or ice cream. Enjoy the Village Green. Walk out on the dock and admire the boats.

I agree with Tom ; Northport is great. When my kids were small we used to drive there from Patchogue, have lunch, stroll thru the town and stop at the playground my the harbor.

Sayville is also a great town to stroll in. Patchogue is coming back, and My all time favorite ; Sag Harbor.
