I'd judge it more on a town by town basis instead of lumping them by county. For example (if I had to choose), i'd rather live in North Amityville than in Hempstead. On the flip side, i'd rather live in Freeport over Brentwood.
Traditionally, Wyandanch and Hempstead were widely considered to be the worst hoods on the island but nowadays that title has shifted more towards Brentwood and Central Islip because of the influx of MS-13 and other violent latin american gangs.
I wouldn't necessarily close myself off to most of those towns though. Theres good and bad as well as pro's and con's to every town whether it's rich or poor.

I've never been to Wyandanch. Is it really that serious out there? Try to compare it to a similar neighborhood in Queens if you can. More like a watered-down version of South Jamaica, maybe? I've been to Terrace Avenue before. Besides there, and some little part of Rockville Centre (shocking to me), those 2 places are the only places I've been in Long Island that would remotely resemble a real hood in the 5 boros, but I havent really been everywhere in LI.

Wyandanch has a lot of run down, abandoned houses, crappy yards, etc. But it's doesn't have the same feel as anything in any of the Five Boroughs because it still looks sort of suburban...bigger yards, single family homes, etc.
