I have pavers and the main section has crushed base and part of my walk way has concrete underneath. Everything is fine (5 years+), but there has been some settling - on both sections. I would go with the crushed base for the drainage, the concrete areas are more prone to pooling water when it rains.

I have a patio made up of pavers with a crushed base that is around 400 sqft. The only issue that's come up through the years is that weeds come up. If you use square blocks, the expense won't be bad. The more intricate the design, the more expensive the pavers and the more expensive the labor will be (as more days will be required).

The following link may give you an idea of cost, but imo it's a bit high.

I don't have a concrete base under my paver patio. It's sand, but the problem I am having is weeds growing in between the pavers that I have to pick out. what else can be done? I have tried round up but 2 weeks later they are back. Next is vinegar and salt.

Bleach/water mixture.

Power wash the sand out. And use polymeric sand. It hardens like cement, and weeds will not grow.
