Family of 5 considering big move from San Francisco Bay Area to East Coast for job in NYC. Looking for a good family town/city, good public schools, diversity, down to earth people, decent shopping & restaurants nearby. Trying to keep the commute to NYC to under an hour. Its a lot, I know, but I thought I'd start my search aiming high. Hoping to spend in range of 800K to 1.2M for minimum of 4 bed/ 2 bath. Coming from a family oriented, beautiful, semi-rural community just outside SF with great schools. Hoping to find something similar. I've been checking out North Nassau County on Long Island, seems like a good commute but what's it like living there? Any ideas upstate NY or NJ? Seems like CT is over 1 hour commute, true? Are high school rowing clubs easy to find/get into? I'm worried about making the right choice for my kids (2 in middle school, 1 in high). Appreciate any ideas. Thanks!

Big move for sure. I don't know how much of the forum you have read but here are a couple of threads you may want to check out:

//www.city-data.com/forum/long-...ng-island.html

I am sure there are several areas that will fit your request since many parts of LI are family oriented & friendly. When I lived in Long Beach there were many people from California who fit right in. Good luck on your search.

Sounds like Huntington would be a great place for you.

Default Have you considered Garden City?

Garden City is a wonderful Village with a fabulous commute - under 40 minutes into New York City. You have the best of both worlds in the villages of Westen Nassau County: Convenience to NYC and yet the charm of the villages of Floral Park, Garden City, Bellerose Village and Stewart Manor.Moderator cut: advertising

OP states they want diversity. Other than Huntington, Melville, or Dix HIlls, none of the other towns suggested are known for diversity.

Greenlawn Village/Centerport might be pushing your one hour commute but they might be right up your alley and have some of the water sports you seek given their location. Maybe a Sea Cliff would work for you, or Bayville.

This is true. Perhaps some of the western towns that is seeing an Asian influx...New Hyde Park, Great Neck, Herricks, Manhasset Hills?
