I spent about six months putting together rankings for personal reasons (we're moving and want the best district possible). For under 700k, you're probably going to struggle to get into the best of the best. Syosset is your best bet, and you will make some concessions as far as space, home condition, etc. We're looking to spend around 700k and we've been shopping since May.
Herricks, East Williston, Jericho, Roslyn, Manhasset, and Great Neck are widely considered the best we have to offer. A notch below would be Plainview-Old Bethpage, Cold Spring Harbor, Rockville Centre, Garden City, North Shore, and perhaps Hewlett-Woodmere and Bellmore-Merrick. I do want to point out that I have no dog in this race; I live in Massapequa and am satisfied by the schools here. We are moving, but school district is one part of our calculation.
Syosset is diverse and the homes are well maintained. We considered it, but frankly every house seems to come with a bidding war attached. Bellmore is easy to get, Merrick is not, so you might look in North Bellmore for affordable housing stock. Houses south of Merrick Road are less desirable to some because of Sandy, but how you view that is largely dependent on your personal feelings. Plainview-Old Bethpage is quiet and beautiful, but there's not much going on as far as any kind of town goes, which is a bit of a bummer.
We're leaving Massapequa, but I would recommend it in your range. You can get a beautiful house and the kids will go to good schools.
All that said, maybe aim for Syosset and be open to Bellmore. We're spending lots of time visiting these neighborhoods to get a sense of them, and the tribal knowledge you build that way is very helpful. We've been told to stay away from Plainview-Old Bethpage "if we put Christmas lights up," told Lynbrook "is red and the people want it to stay red" (apparently a handful of hipsters have moved in?), heard that Syosset is now a stop on the road for families who send kids to good schools then flee the country, and seen some pretty crazy people debate North Bellmore vs. South Bellmore on this very board.
So I guess I'm saying someone will tell you you're wrong no matter what you choose. So just find a house you like and let the rest follow.
