I've taken Uber twice in smithtown. Both times the same 1 and only car was available for an immediate pickup. I have a feeling its not too popular out here during a weekday. Maybe its better during rush hours and weekends.
Thinking about driving uber on long island and curious to know if it's a busy market and profitable
I think it depends on where. I've noticed parts of Suffolk you have to drive because everything is so far away. In an area that has a high volume of drivers, Uber may not be much of a demand.
The interesting thing about Uber is that supply creates demand.
I would view the lack of other drivers as an opportunity.
Excellent point.
I have used Uber several times on Long Island. Usually no problem. There have been a few times where there was quite a wait for a driver. A few weeks ago I was almost stuck at Islip airport. App kept telling me the driver was 19 min away, but the time and driver location never changed. Cancelled and tried again, but the same driver kept coming up.
Fortunately, there were available cabs (and at a lower cost than Uber quoted). I think Uber has made some of the (usually disgusting) LI cabs up their game.
Bottom line, I think there is a market for Uber drivers. As the number of available drivers increase, it is likely that demand will increase. There is likely a pent up demand for clean, reliable transportation on LI from people who were previously reluctant to use LI taxis.
I have used it from Hicksville train station late at night w/o any issues. I was using them way before they where even legal in Nassau.
