Wasn't sure where to post this but I think it's a wonderful idea. My Brother and his family have done this. Instead of buying unnecessary gifts for each other in our family they have decided to adopt a family for Christmas this year and buy them, food, clothing, gifts etc.... all under our names. We did something similar when I was a kid through our church but it wasn't actual gifts I think it was $20.00 a month. The family they are adopting also has 3 kids just like my brother. BTW they live in Chicago. I am stilling buying the kids gifts anyway even though my brother said it wasn't necessary (they are 1, 6 and 4).I would do the same thing since we don't have kids but I really can't afford to. I would like to contribute a gift item to my brothers adopted family.

Can someone adopt me and give me gifts?
I really like the green paper with Benjamin Franklins portrait.

We are doing that at work again, our department is going to adopt one of the families enrolled in the Head Start Program rather than having a department party / gift swap. I work for a school division so getting a families name is no problem.

Our office does that each year as well. We collect among the agents and then a couple of us go and buy however much we can afford (depending on the wish list). Volunteers do the wrapping and then we play Santa. Very rewarding to do something for someone in need.

I tried to do this once in the past, but was told 2 weeks before the holiday that the project was being scrapped due to some red-tape. I have no clue why. Very sad.

I have no clue how to go about doing it again. Don't have an office and don't go to church. I don't think individuals can just do it on their own somehow?

There's always Toys for Tots which is run by the Marines. A google search would probably turn up a collection site near you. We usually get gifts for older kids who tend to be overlooked.

Now that I think of it my old office job did this. The boss was very into this particular charity and we were each given a wish list from a child and bought gifts. To make it more affordable 3 of us went in on one child who had about 10 things on her list. We went to Wal-Mart and got her everything she asked for.

I was involved in delivering Adopt A Family gifts a few years ago to the 'receiving' families. What an eye-opener that was. Escalades in driveway. Air Jordans on 12 yr olds. Not to mention leather coats, polished nails, iPhone 4s (I said it was a few years ago) big screen tvs on walls and Mac Books on the kitchen table. etc etc.

My guess is the kids didn't get gifts and they were hocked for booze or drugs.

Gifter Beware.

As sad as it is I truly believe this. There are real families out there who are in need and then there are those who love to scam this time of year.
