High deserts are much less hot than places like Phoenix. Albuquerque is dry yet temperate, Santa Fe is a little cooler and moister. Flagstaff, Arizona has excellent weather also, although not part of a desert.

I like seasons & foliage and not having the same damn weather all the time.

The cons definitely outweigh the pros for Cali.
