Is the commute to Staten Island from Nassau (not sure where exactly) really that awful? My husband works overnights (starts work at 6pm and is off work at 5am).

Valley Stream would be better than Bayville.

Yes. It is horrible. No good way to get there, especially at that time of day.

The ride home at 5am would be traffic free. Going in would be a brutal 2 hours minimum.

Really depends on where you in both. Valley Stream to something just over the bridge (Fort Wadsworth, Concord) wouldn't be much fun going in, but something that could be doable.

If your going from anything that much further into Nassau or deeper into Staten Island, forget it. If you are going from Oyster Bay to Tottenville, you are better off walking...

except on Fridays in the summer, which would require leaving before noon or sitting in traffic for who knows how many hours

I work primarily on LI, but on occasion I need to go to Brooklyn. Driving to Brooklyn is brutal enough. Then add Staten Island to that will be extra savagery.
