Find a house with a gas heating conversion. Smart homeowners are dumping oil heat. The house I sold in Valley Stream in Nov. had this upgrade, and I saved a bundle in heating costs thanks to the conversion. Also, I didn't have to worry about the tank leaking, as it had been abandoned.
Gas for a 1,300 sq. ft. house cost me about $250 a month during a normal winter. This figure is for a normal cold month, not subzero. Also, insulation was inadequate.
Lynbrook has very good schools and the main LIRR station on Sunrise Highway offers a fast commute. It's a nice town with good shopping and restaurants. Some parts are more upscale than others, like the community of Tudor homes just north of Rockaway Avenue and south of Sunrise. Ditto, the area along Union Avenue just north of East Rockaway.
I think the area between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road across from Greis Park is more industrial/blue collar. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'm on a sentimental LI journey from the southwest. (Just paid a $25 gas bill.)
I was paying that bill off forever.
Had Petro back then.
I couldn’t keep up with bill and they were relentless.
Is there any truth to the rumor that oil companies that give you a free service contract adjust your boiler to burn hot? The point would be to stoke the machine to waste fuel. Someone warned never to accept a free service contract because they have a financial stake in the amount of fuel your oil burner burns.
Converting from oil was one of the best financial decisions I made, and I encourage everyone to convert if possible.
As you find houses you like - ask the owners for a few months of utility bills. It's the only way to be sure. And it's not an unreasonable . request. When I sold one of my houses I had all of that information ready to send out to anyone who asked.
When I read about you guys' oil bills, it makes me glad I'm on gas.
Also makes me glad I installed a wood burning fire place insert.
Just got my Dec gas bill, and it was $125. Would be much higher if I didn't have the insert burning wood to keep the gas furnace from firing up so often.
I have always lived in Queens so I know little about LI and the utilities there but why is gas even that high? Is it the delivery of the gas that makes up the bulk of the bill?
Additionally, the house that I am looking at in Lynbrook has oil heating but it appears to have a gas stove. Does that mean that gas is hooked up to the house and I will have an easier time converting from oil to gas? How much would a conversion roughly cost? Thanks.
^^^^
Yes. Having gas service to the house makes the conversion easier and will save you a few bucks.
It is also possible that they have propane gas for the stove, so it's not a guarantee that they can convert to gas heating.
