I am sorry for your situation, but as you have found out, unfortunately you are not unique in the area. The best suggestion I can offer you is to contact Catholic Charities of Long Island in Hicksville. They may be able to guide you. Good luck.

social service can only put you up in a shelter which would be unhealthy for my child

Find a cheap apartment to crash in temporarily.
Beats staying in a shelter.
Even if you're all crammed in a shoebox, it would be temporary.
Sometimes you gotta make sacrifices.

Why not get a cheap apartment in the meantime that's not 55 and older. If the Illness is life threatening I am surprised you haven't come here already. Even if it's a 1 bed room give your child the bed room and you and your husband sleep on a pull out couch. Do you have family in NY or on LI? I am not sure what your child's disability is but maybe they have a support group that can help. does he need to be hospitalized? Have you tried putting this out there on face book? Have you looked into any section 8 housing?

Is there a Ronald McDonald House that could temporarily house you?
