Npt-E. Npt are nice. For a smaller town feel you might like Greenlawn, NY. You can walk to bank, library, pizza...Taxes are much cheaper in Npt, E-Npt compared to Greenlawn (which is Harborfields school district).
For a smaller town feel you might like Greenlawn, NY.
For those who may not be familiar with Greenlawn:
Greenlawn is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the central part of the Town of Huntington, in the northwest part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Greenlawn in the Town of Huntington is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Centerport; on the east by the Hamlet of East Northport and the Hamlet of Elwood; on the south by the Hamlet of Elwood, the Hamlet of Dix Hills, the Hamlet of South Huntington and the Hamlet of Huntington Station; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Huntington Station and the Hamlet of Huntington.
The Hamlet of Greenlawn has a different border than does the "Greenlawn, NY 11740" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Greenlawn, NY 11740" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Greenlawn and a place can have other than a "Greenlawn, NY 11740" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Greenlawn): places that have a "Greenlawn, NY 11740" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Greenlawn are in the Hamlet of Huntington and the Hamlet of Elwood; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Greenlawn with a "Huntington, NY 11743" mailing address.

Either East Northport or Northport would fit your criterea. Northport has a bit more of a small town feeling to it and a more quaint downtown, but is also more expensive. The main business district of East Northport is on Larkfield Road, so you wouldn't want to live right on the road, but a few blocks off might fit the bill. You may want to look in the "numbered streets" as they are all walking distance to the stores, playgrounds, library, etc. What is your price range? As you have probably noticed, we have homes from about $400,000 up to the millions in this area.
Tom is correct in that both towns will meet your criteria. Northport is definitely more of a village-like life style where people all seem to know one another and have several community events throughout the year. But East Northport has done a nice job of providing some of that as well courtesy of a well run Chamber of Commerce.

Again, a post I agree with. Northport is a magical place to raise a family and with your price point you should be able to find some excellent options, particularly in this market. If you do target Northport consider looking at houses within walking distance of the Lewis-Oliver Farm (between Burr and Burt two blocks off of Main Street). The children will love it and there are tons of families with school age kids in that grid. Otherwise I'd recommend looking at house convenient to Main Street.
In the 600's you should be able to find someting in Northport. Our limit was 550K and there were some options in Northport, but they were on small lots or needed more work than we could afford to put into them. We have an accepted offer on a home in East Northport now. We've been renting here since June and really like the beaches(especially Crab Meadow), the libraries, and we've heard great things about the schools. Main Street in Northport is so pretty - we love walking down to Cow Harbor and stopping at the candy store or for an ice cream at the old sweet shop. That area was our first choice, but everything we liked was out of our price range.

Welcome to East Northport. I'm sure you are going to love it here. You do not have to live in the Village of Northport to enjoy what it has to offer and you will not have to pay the additional village tax.
I would suggest any area North of 25A, either the incorporated Village section or east of there. There are some lovely homes for sale in this area within your price range. There are two Elementary Schools North of 25A, Ocean Ave School and Norwood Ave School.
Both are excellent schools. Npt-East Npt is a large school district. six elementary schools, two middle schools and one High School. While east Npt is considered a nice area, it has changed alot in the past ten years. Too many Mexican's hanging around bothering the teens.

I live in East Northport, and I haven't yet seen a Mexican bothering a teen. Where do the Mexicans bother the teens?
I live near Larkfield and Pulaski. Lots of teens. None seem bothered. Many of them walk the streets with Lacross sticks and skateboards. Many play basketball in the streets. In my area, many of the homes are busy getting fastly renovated. Lots of good couples, lots of kids. Good hard-working people. I love it here.

Don't be a snob. Or a bigot.
I am neither and find it odd that E. Npt folks call Npt folks snobs because they often do. Personally, if I were relocating to LI, neither area would be my first choice. I simply replied from my own experience during those horrible woods parties on Bellrose. Not to mention the drugs passed along to the kids from the Mexican's. Sorry if I offended you because that was not my intention. I have my own opinions as a resident of this community. Are you aware that E. Npt is commonly known as E. Northpuerto rico by the children? Cause it is. Nuff said.

Furthermore, you complained about drug dealers. Who do you think they are dealing the drugs too???? The TEENS, who have the money to buy them.

Well, anybody who closes their comments with "Nuff said" should be taken very seriously.
E. Northpuerto rico??? LOLOLOLOL...I think you might be projecting a singular experience onto an entire area. With friends and family in both towns, I would be happy in either area, for the both the safety, community feel, and strength of the schools. My only reservation in fact, would be how homogenous the school district is...To the OP, best bet is to of course visit and drive through. There appears to be a diversity of opinion...or at least one divergent voice.
Good luck to you and welcome back to LI!
