I've been forum browsing and it looks like people don't recommend getting what HD or Lowes will sell you (still haven't figured out if that is all brands they sell or just the standard ones they have on the shelf.
Are there recommendations for decent quality door manufacturers that don't break the bank? Any recommended stores to visit?

Both big box stores have a reasonable price brand in a multitude of styles and they work fine. I know Lowes has better grades such as Pella that can be custom ordered if you really have a desire to invest that kind of money or want something unique.
Yeah, I just love when homeowners supply me with Home Depot doors. The shallow hinge mortises, the off-center strikeplates, the gobs of sealant goo to get scraped out, the poorly assembled jambs.
I went with 3 feather river doors on my expansion. 2 have been fine. The most expensive one (still cheap though), the glue (or goo) around the glass started to melt out. This door had the full glass Andersen storm door, so it gets a lot hotter. The other two had storm doors better vented with pull down screens.
Doesn’t really bother me. I’d still buy the cheaper door at an additional 30% off when on sale.
I recently purchased Hmi fiberglass door from unified windows in hempstead. The door is beautiful and I am getting compliments from everyone who walks in through it. I was looking at therma thru also but Hmi makes better quality doors.
