I’ve been advised by a local contractor that there are internal problems with my chimney the require that it be torn down and replaced, even though the chimney bricks are in excellent condition. The estimate of cost is over fifty grand. I have a single story home with the chimney on the outside of the building venting an oil boiler. I’ve heard that houses are no longer built with chimneys. Is this my only option, or are there other less expensive ways to re-vent the boiler?

Holy crap. This some kind of BS post? That’s one expense a typical home owner would never expect. Get a second opinion. What kind of professional thinks internal problems is a sufficient reason for a 50k bill.

Cracks ($175.00 to $3,000.00)
Masonry joints expand and contract with seasons and temperature fluctuation. This can lead to cracks forming and allowing smoke, carbon monoxide, and sometimes even stray embers to get between your walls our out of the chimney and onto your roof. Cracks will most often form at corners before they form anywhere else. However, cracks in the middle of the back of a fireplace aren’t uncommon. If found early enough, simple brick mortar repair can resolve the issue. If left untreated, they can lead to structural damage, increased risk of fire, and can cost upwards of around $3,000.00 to repair.

If all you have are some cracks to be repaired, you can expect to pay around $175.00. A complete rebuilding of your chimney from the crown to just below the roofline can cost $1,000 to $3,000.00. If the entire chimney all the way down to the fireplace needs to be replaced, it can cost around $10,000.

50k seems very high. get another quote

Plus it’s just venting an oil burner. Assuming it is not falling apart it could just need a liner.

50k is completely insane, I just had a liner put in and out of curiosity asked what a new chimney cost, was told around 10k give or take. Tell that moron to take a hike and get second opinions.
