A drive from Trondheim in the north to the southern city of Kristiansand takes a painful 21 hours and requires seven ferry crossings. Now, Norway hopes to cut this drive down to 11 hours by building bridges and tunnels to help travelers across the fjords.
I thought of this years ago. Just bore under the north shore. No one will care. Put utility ventilation access at the MTA yard in Oyster Bay.
I also thought of making it a rail tunnel, tying into a project for a new major airport where Republic is now, replacing all the cemeteries.

The more you describe the changes needed the more this will never happen, what about the other side is there any desire for this connection beyond a handful of advocates?
Agreed, just saying that if it were to go ahead, there's been too much development on the land that was originally projected for a 135 extension to the water. 100's of homes in the 750K-3 million range, even half a private school to claim via eminent domain. Sagtikos is state owned land from the LIE to the water.
That said, if Cuomo ever managed to push this through there's no doubt he'll select the most expensive way imaginable (so 135 it is).

If he ever did push it through, it would be the fight of his life. Too many would be fighting NIMBY.

One idea (given newer tunneling technology) is to start the tunnel at 135 and dip under (well under) all the property you note and emerge in Connecticut. Instead of NIMBYS they’ll be NUMBY’s.
