If you're talking about the crazy a$$ tailgaters, I can relate.

& I dunno if the following is a result of me being an American? A NYer? A LIer? Or a person familiar with the 'Close Talker' phenomenon popularized by 'Seinfeld', Larry David, et al? (I'll let you decide)

For me, the tailgating thing is similar to the apparent unawareness of 'personal space', social awareness of boundaries, etc.

Like this but cars:

Tailgaters don’t cause traffic. Most are probably tailgating because of someone’s unreasonable driving. I do admit there is an occasional dirtbag tailgating due to malice but most are just uneducated.

I know a good way, move to a state where the traffic is little to none. When I was in Arizona this past summer the traffic was very light, not even one car stopped to gaze at a cop who pulled someone over. We went somewhere in rush hour which was a breeze compare to LI. People actually know how to drive out there.

Road test. Every 2 years.
And being that this is the oppressive and controlling communist state of New York, pass a law that limits the amount of vehicles per person and per family/household.

I truly am surprised this has not been suggested. It not only would rake in huge amounts of money, but, it just might prevent a few accidents. I am not a kid, I am retired and I have an excellent driving record, however, I acknowledge that as we age, we are not as sharp as we used to be. I have lived through the nightmares that some of our friends had of taking keys away or rather trying to take keys away from parents for their own good and that of others. In fact, one had to go to the his dad'd doctor behind his back and ask that he write a letter to DMV and the police dept. The insurance record supported his request and the doctor told the patient that in his opinion he was endangering both himself and others if he continued to drive and that he would write that into his medical records and should he have an accident, he could lose a lot of money as it was documented.

I would suggest a visit to our C-D survival and self sufficiency forum for you...

A two car length gap leaves you room to get out and around of any emergency that may arise, like the car in front or behind catching on fire, a bump and rob or some crazy that thinks you cut him/her off at the last intersection getting out of the car (maybe with a weapon) and pounding on (or smashing) your windshield.

Or a semi that just lost it's brakes hurtling towards the light intersection no one but you has noticed yet. Would you rather take the time to undo your seatbelt, unlock the door, check for oncoming traffic before running for it, or simply turn the wheel, step on the gas and get the Hell Out Of Dodge...?

Is Long Island really in need of a drag strip?

I thought we already had a drag strip under the name of LIE or I-495.
