On the top of your question, I was wondering, if there is any specific period that you have to wait till you can apply for accessory apartment permit? I've heard about one town (I don't remember which one) that you have to wait 3 years after purchasing the property before you apply for accessory apartment unit. Is this a case for Brookhaven?
Also, Is there any official list of all requirements?
If i make it legal is a second meter permitted and/or required?
A second meter is a good idea if you plan on having the tenant pay for electric. Occasionally I see "tenant pays 1/3 of electric" etc.
Some landlords just "include" it in the rental amount.
Check into the municipal code for the township. Some have it written into their codes that the presence of additional utility meters can be used as presumptive evidence of an accessory apartment on the premises. Something to consider if looking to install before the rest of the paperwork is sorted out.
Email someone from the building department so you can have it in writting whether it's yes or no.
There's no point guessing.
And 1-family homes are only allowed 1 meter, whether it has a permit for a legal apartment or not.
Granted, that was a long time. Which is why the most logical would be to get an answer in writing from the building department.
