It seems absurd that the LIRR station basically abuts the airport itself, but the terminals are clear on the other side. Has there been any studies done on potential costs and benefits to doing so?
Welcome to the Long Island forum. Us NYC CD'ers have been making a big push onto the Long Island forum as of late. Last week on another thread I brought up an idea to connect MacArthur with all the LIRR lines and with all the ferries via light rail. I called it the Nichols Rd light rail. It runs from the Fire Island ferries to the LI Sound ferry, stopping at each of the LIRR lines and MacArthur Airport in between.
Thanks, G-Dale! I've been posting on and off here for a while.
The LIRR station at Ronkokoma is currently in existence and in the midst of getting double-tracking on the Main Line. The airports facilities on the southern end are generally stout single-story buildings and parking lots without much development while the LIRR station to its south looks like parking lots, a small section of woods and a composting facility.
It might even work out that the current southern half of facilities could be for air freight operations and the northern part for passenger.

I'm new here. Just started chiming in out here as of last week or so. I completely jumped over Nassau and Western Suffolk. The raw potential is further out on Suffolk. And MacArthur and the Ronkonkoma station are pivotal for the upward swing, and vital to tap the full potential of it.
No way a study has not been done yet. If not then they are completely backwards out there. I've done my study already. It's exactly what the LIRR needs. You'll have people commuting in both directions.

NIMBYs said no new improvements to LI
Keep everything as is
Thanks

The new terminals were just a add on and remodel of the existing one. Relocating that to the north side would have been wayy too much $$$ with everything form electrical, sewer, water, roads and changing of runways, etc.
If anything they could just a elevated light rail from Ronkonkoma LIRR to the airport on that north side.

Is it actually true though? Has there been any studies to this effect?
How many flights go in and out of MacArthur daily? How would they recoup the millions of dollars this would require?
I think the short answer is no ROI and no political will + pushback from NIMBYs.
