It looks like for GC the best route would be to walk to the train, or drive and park in Mineola, in the garage that is open to all?

It depends where you live in GC but most house are near a train station (since both the main and Hempstead lines) are running through the village. Mineola has a paid garage, open to all.

Great Neck is a good spot. Trains and buses run through there. A lot of co-ops/rentals are listed. Excellent school district. A lot of stores/restaurants to walk to. Supermarket is near train station.
