5 towns is considered too far out of the way for most people. Also has reputation for being heavy with orthodox. If you aren't part of them, you don't feel part of the community. Also the orthodox won seats in Lawrence school district and have cut many programs to save taxes because their kids go to private yeshivas.
Most people on LI are looking for good schools, good commute by train or highway, and a sense of community. Most of the 5 towns does not offer that, RVC does.

Too far out of the way for what???

Far Rock to Penn is 45 mins. So all those stops after Far Rockaway are less than 45 mins.

Ya'll let ppl push you around too much

Good value in 5 Towns.

Too far south by car to get to major parkways for the Island.

Get it, you like the Rock, but it isn't everyone's cup of tea. Expand your horizons a bit. Plenty of different areas on LI ranging from beaches to forests. It ain't NYC and to many people that is the selling point.

I think its actually vice versa

Ppl on LI need to expand their horizons a bit

NYC ok to work, but not ok to live

If you work in Manhattan, how can you beat a 45 min commute from 5 Towns?

I take it you are single with no kids. LI would be a bore for someone in that situation. For a family though, LI represents something different than NYC. Most areas the house is cheaper than NYC first off. Then add better schools with more local control than the bloated NYC DOE. More room, .less people than NYC.
Taxes suck, but you are exchanging them for NYC income taxes and private school tuition so it is a wash.
LI certainly is not for everyone but it has its benefits.

Nahh, married with kids.

But I hear you though.

My point is not to troll, but to open dialogue.

Hey dialogue is always good. I came over from Queens 25 years ago. LI was a cheaper option, was working on LI anyway, and my old area was changing over. It didn't feel like home anymore. Kids got a good education, they needed some extra help which would have been a pain to get with DOE. Will I stay here forever? Probably not, but it fit my needs at the time.
