I did the commute from Southold once a week for about a year and a half. It is more like 3+ hours each way. For anything east of Ronkonkoma you have only one train in the morning to get into the city by 9am. I would get that at Southold at 5:40am on Monday morning, make 2 transfers, and get into Penn at 8:20, then get on the subway for the last bit. By time I got to work I felt like I already worked a full day.
When we first moved out here it was the middle of the summer, and instead of a super long Monday with the 5:40am start, I switched to going in on Sunday evening. As fall progressed, I realized that they stopped all train service all winter out here on the weekends! I switched to the Jitney for Sunday evenings into the city.
The return trip from the city also has the same limited choice of a single train in the evening to get you anywhere past Ronkonkoma.

We are looking to relocate our family from Queens to a north fork town on Long Island. We do have to consider (at least for now) commute time into NYC . Is it possible to find a place that has solid schools, a country feel and nice community, all with a commute that is not too overwhelming (about an hour into Penn/LIC)? Thanks!!
Great Neck. Find one of the apartments near the train station. Or you can go up north and buy a house/apt. Then take the bus to the LIRR station. I know some people park near Little Neck train station to go to the city.
Ops. I thought I saw north of the island close to the city.
OP, this has to be the barmiest idea I've heard in a decade. People commuting from western Nassau hate, hate, HATE the LIRR. The system goes into collapse when a few wet leaves fall onto the tracks.
Consider Orange or Sullivan counties. Commuting from upstate NY brings you lower home prices, the rustics you're craving and a bad commute. There are buses (Shortline and Adirondack) that leave from towns like Monticello straight down to the Port Authority bus terminal on 42nd St. At least you wouldn't have to keep changing trains.
Wacky people also commute from the Poconos for a bigger house and more property. How much travel time can you take? Making it a manly competition?
That's not a horrible location, has a nice lot, and good schools, for a (Long Island) reasonable price and (Long Island) acceptable taxes.
Slightly disingenuous to be saying that it's on a private road and not the main road, as it's just a small road next to the big road. That private road will likely need paving in the next few years too.
That road is useless. I almost purchased a house down the street on 3 acres. There is no noise on that part of ocr. I love that area but the inventory is non existent. Country feel no neighbors but close enough to civilization and the train.
Probably means "North Shore".
I'm the only jerk crazy enough to commute to western Nassau from the fork which is horrible enough.
I couldn't even imagine a commute to the city. Actually yes I could, and it would be hell on earth.
My old boss used to commute from the Hamptons every day and it was hell on earth. Then again he thought he lived in heaven on earth so why not?
