I was wondering why my two year car registration renewal for my 3580 lb automobile is $169 instead of the fee listed on the DMV chart, which is $59. So I decided to look into the small $110 discrepancy.
- there is an additional "two year use fee" of $60 for Suffolk county residents - highest of all counties in the state (along with Westchester). In Nassau that fee is "only" $30 for two years. Stupid me. I foolishly thought the registration fee was a "use fee".
- also added to the renewal : a "Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax" of $50 per renewal. This is charged to downstate residents only. Does anyone know where the money collected for the fee ends up ? And exactly what is a mobility tax ? (remember the Beatles song "Taxman"?)
Anywhere north of Dutchess the reggie renewal on this car would be $79 (most of upstate charges $20 vehicle use fee, $10 if under 3500 lbs).
Just needed to vent.
The MTA is worse than any private corporation. What they can get away with, any private organization would be forced out of business for the same thing.
