My earliest memories of supermarkets in my life (from the 1950s-onward), growing up in Queens, NY, were the supermarkets closest to where my family lived. There was a King Kullen on one side of the street (maybe 2 blocks from our home) and an A&P directly across the street from that. The A&P, in later years, became a Waldbaums. At a somewhat of a greater trek was a Bohack's Supermarket (remember them? that chain closed out altogether by 1971).
So my earliest distinct memories in life of going to the supermarket with my mother was to "King Kullen". And now they are no more? Well, they sure lasted long enough.
Even more surprising was the dissolution of the venerable and ubiquitous "A&P Supermarkets". Who ever thought that THEY would come to an end?
a. the Walmart in Commack & the nearly-adjoining Target in Commack . . . both nearly adjoining Dix Hills
That Target is (sadly) closing on February 4th . It is one of six in the entire country that did
not do well, apparently . I liked shopping there because it was never crowded and was immaculate.
Well I sure hope they don't expand that new home decor store adjacent, that is some of the most soulless, uninspired stuff I have come across in a long time...
Locals and experienced out of towner's know how to get from one plaza to the next by taking the back road (Arthur Street). It particularly comes in handy in escaping Costco or ShopRite out the back way, and not getting caught in the sometimes ungodly backup heading out Garret Place to the light at Crooked Hill..
They might deem it too close to Trader Joe's on Jericho Turnpike. Supermarkets of this nature seem to have some official or unofficial "range" with regards to not having two too close together.
There's one going to be opening in...appropriately enough for this thread, the former King Kullen up by the other Target in Commack
Some (many) of you may already know this, but, for those who may not know this:
Where the King Kullen supermarket is/was that you are referring to (in a shopping center located along Veterans Highway, just shortly down the road going eastbound from Commack Road), that was the location of the large and famed former "LONG ISLAND ARENA (also commonly known as the "COMMACK ARENA"), a large entertainment and sports arena analogous to the Downstate New York metro area's Madison Square Garden, Barclays' Center, Nassau Coliseum, et al ---- where, besides hosting professional ice hockey and basketball teams, car racing, the Circus, political events and speeches by famed politicians, et al was the site of many concerts by world-famous performers and groups during its existence (with some of those performances having even been recorded on albums and/or film or video for all perpetuity).

Wow, I had totally forgotten that until you mentioned it!!! I went to a hockey game there during the late 1960s, one of the first places I drove to when I got my license. Then during the 1980s a friend of mine and I used to go to the flea market that was in the arena then. It was more convenient than going to the one at Roosevelt Field. Eventually we got out of the flea-market phase (better jobs, LOL), they tore the arena down, and I rarely had occasion to even go up that way anymore until the mid 2000s -- by which time I'd forgotten all about the arena that was once there.
Thanks for the memory-jog!
That reminds me, too, that during the 1970s there was a running joke about the Commack Motor Inn (right down the road, with the White Castle next to it.) Apparantly it was the go-to place for illicit liasons.
I am pretty sure there was one either in East Meadow or Hempstead. I grew up in East Meadow and there was an A&P on Hempstead Turnpike and a Sunrise market on Newbridge Road south of Hempstead Turnpike, but I am not 100% sure where the Bohacks was. I do remember it though, it was one of those 3 markets where we shopped. My mom didn't drive and so the stores we went to had to be either in walking distance or on a bus route in order to get there other than on a weekend when my dad wasn't working.
There's a Facebook page with tons of photos of Bohacks stores:
