I'm waiting for them to start requiring permits for these. Only $14.88 at Walmart. But probably thousands of dollars in permits and increase in property taxes.
Permits yeah. Probably can't tax it because it's not a permanent structure. The fence requirements alone would probably be a grand or so.
The only hassle with them that I remember is all the neighborhood kids were in it and little Johnny was hogging up the whole pool. But we solved that ourselves without the cops or the town or anyone else.
Agreed. In fact, OP can tell them “you obviously have the wrong house, check around to see where there might be illegal tenants”. You don’t have to give them away, just get them fixated elsewhere.
OP, if you can get good money for your home and don’t have very strong family ties to LI I would definitely consider moving.
That is certainly tempting. I gave some thought to renting the place out, but it is just a PITA, getting permits for work I did back in the '80s and in the '90s, just so I can rent it legally.
I'll probably end up selling it sooner rather than later, permit situation and all. Too much of a headache to consider.
I think the best thing my kid did was to move away - this place is too expensive.

You don’t want to be an absentee landlord in NY State. Too many tenant rights. Sell for cash and move.

If the water is 18” deep you technically need a permit and a fence. No property tax increase as it’s not a structure.
Years ago I had a 10’ Intex inflatable that my kids used - filter pump so while not “permanent” it wasn’t a drain and fill type for each use.
If that’s the case then put the thing under a canopy tent...
Then the town will fine you for yard structures with no permit...
