Have you been in Manhattan lately? The razzle dazzle is just fine. There is a new bigger building being built on just about every block. Business is thriving in Manhattan. It's what is keeping long island sustainable. For how long though? I do know when I'm retired, I will be moving somewhere cheaper. I can't live here not working, even if I had no mortgage.

There has to be a way for one to make that decision even prior to retirement. For you, it seems like just by having a job - it makes sense to be here. Everyone's situation is different. For some it makes overall sense to stay put, for some it does not.

One is a fool to stay put if it does not make sense - retirement is a just a checkpoint/jolt/major change where people consider it to be a socially acceptable point in life for a change.

You: "Oh, I moved after I retired"
Random Old Dude: Oh ok, cool.

If it didn't make sense for me to stay, I would be gone. I have too much time invested in my job. I'm not struggling in my current situation. If I was, I would be living somewhere else.

Interesting read... https://www.newsday.com/business/ama...ing-1.27314520

Between the lines = salaries couldve been pushed up here on Long Island. New York is closed for business. I think other companies wouldve followed Amazon here. I feel bad for small businesses such as restaurants, dry cleaners, day care centers, etc, that would've benefited. Citibank is already vacating LIC too.

Shouldn't always make this a "If you can't cut in on LI - get out" argument.... I'm talking about comparing a suzook doing well in NY with suzook doing better (or for that matter worse) elsewhere decisions. Thats really the crux of my point. It has absolutely nothing to do with someone struggling. You can save a million in one place, what if you can save 1.2 million elsewhere (generalizing everything). Still feelin' happy with a million mate... ?

Often times you compare yourself in place X vs someone else in place Y - so many things wrong with that picture. Its never going to work out.

The bottom line is people usually 'do' something when their butt is kicked, the path of least resistance is to procrastinate.

Thought I read Suzook was a cop and spouse was teacher. Those are 2 professions where you won't do better anyplace in the country than here on LI. Would never make sense to move while employed in those professions.

Disappointed about the amazon situation but understand why it rankled some. As some have pretty much said: The worlds wealthiest man running one of the worlds most valuable company does not need everyone else to subsidize his for-profit firm.

Did you know that Google is adding 12,000 jobs to NYC and did not come begging for a handout (( bringing their total to 20,000 in the city) https://www.wsj.com/articles/google-...ion-1541636579

This is how you do it.. quiet and professional without the tin can out: https://www.6sqft.com/google-to-inve...its-workforce/

The HQ hype, pomp and circumstance that Amazon created in the media wasn’t necessary. Just drew more attention to the deal.

IT takes a democrat mind to justify pushing Amazon away. ONLY idiots would think its a win for New York. 25k jobs and a unlimited taxpayer stream was lost forever by demonrats. Who woulnt trade a few billion in tax incentive for trillions in tax revenue?

Amazon might not have needed the subsidy, but NY was offering it. Perhaps all subsidies should be pulled, or capped.

Google is adding these jobs, correct. But without subsidies there are also no “handcuffs”. Meaning if in 5 years they want to reduce headcount there is no penalty to do so.
