Hi all,

I am married with no kids. When I cook it's hard to find the amount of fresh vegetables I need without overbuying. For example, the recipe calls for "1 sliced carrot." At the supermarket, I have to buy a whole bag of carrots, which all go to waste. This happens to me with a lot of veggies.

I used to work in NYC and they had such nice big salad bars. It would be nice if I could find a big salad bar like that in Nassau and get small amounts of vegetable ingredients like that.

Any suggestions on big, quality salad bars in Nassau County?

The other thing is I'd like to find a butcher. Supermarket chicken is so tough. I have heard they get it frozen and thaw them before they put them on the shelves. Steak can look okay and then I go to cook it and find nasty veins and sinews inside that can barely be cut and/or the bottom of the steak that was hidden in the package is gray, meaning it's almost spoiled

Any suggestions on a quality butcher shop or pork store in Nassau County?

Thanking all of you in advance! I'd love to hear about your favorites!

You know you can freeze vegetables, right? It would be a lot more cost effective than buying vegetables off a salad bar. You can also buy bags of sliced and even shredded carrots so you don't have to do the prep work....you could just divide up those bags and freeze them in portions.

I've seen loose vegetables like carrots somewhere though....maybe Whole Foods?

According to my sister, she is alone now, but she will buy organic produce for just that reason. It is a little more expensive, but they are priced by the pound. She lives in Nassau.

I buy loose vegetables all the time. One carrot, one parsnip for soup. Try the smaller produce markets or supermarkets like Cross Island Fruits. You can also try the ethnic supermarkets too.

I still need to find a good butcher shop or pork store. Got any favorites?

Don't know where in Nassau County you are located, but I know two locations, Zum Stammtisch in Glendale, border of Queens and Nassau County (a restaurant with a store attached to it) and just over the Suffolk border, Forest Pork Store in Huntington Station.

Can't go wrong with either one:
