As Newsday reports, both Nassau and Suffolk counties are reporting higher number of available jobs. However, there are caveats:
- Salaries in most of these new openings are relatively lower (~$50K), especially when compared with NYC jobs.
- Ironically, these lower pay jobs include healthcare occupations which entail more training and skill. Maybe this is due to the concentration of employment in the hands of a few large companies (e.g., Northwell).
It's likely the net effect of this will be Long Islanders enduring long commutes on the inefficient LIRR just to pursue higher pay.
