It amazes me seeing deer now in my neighborhood. My block backs the Greenbelt. This morning at 7:15am a family of five deer walked right past my house as if they were taking a stroll around the block.
Occasionally I would see them at night, now they aren't afraid to come out in the day. I know some of you see them all the time and it's no big deal. But I am seeing more and more out in places where they never used to be.
My brother had them in his back yard. He took a video of them hopping his six foot stockade fence. It's crazy...

Well its due to overbuilding and driving deer out of torn down woods.
Also, the last wolf was shot here back in the '80's so the deer have no natural predators anymore. They have tried using birth control in the feed but that did not work.
But yes they have been appearing in areas not frequented as much anymore.
They really need to scale back on the building on LI. It is getting out of hand. If there is not enough places for people to live then too bad. Go live elsewhere.

Even businesses are building new buildings. There are a lot of abandoned buildings to choose from.
They won't be happy until every inch of Long Island is turned into buildings.
There aren't that many plants/shrubs/trees that deer will NOT eat (especially during the winter), actually. Hostas just happen to be one of the plants that are a deer's version of extremely gourmet food.
A few extremely common landscaping plants that any self-respecting deer will quickly chow down on without hesitation: hostas, daylilies, rhododendrons, azaleas, the Knockout series of roses (yes, even thorny plants are not really a deterrent), pansies, euonymus, yew (even though that plant is toxic to humans, in fact a common chemo drug was derived from it), tulips, clematis, lilies (rabbits love them too), arborvitae, camellias, cherry trees, and hydrangeas.
