I live in Oceanside, and I can hear a chime that sounds exactly at 6pm, every night, coming from the south. I can't tell exactly where it's coming from, but I was on my boat in Reynolds Channel near Long Beach recently when it sounded and it was definitely louder in that direction.
Someone mentioned it was to signal the time to the lifeguards, but that doesn't make sense because it sounds year round.
The fire dept may still have a noon and 6o'clock whistle. It was a way to test the whistle so they knew it was in working order in the event of a fire. This was back when they used them for notification purposes. Many still ring them today.
Whatever it is, I can't imagine it's much fun living near it. I'm several miles away and hear it very clearly.
I suppose it could be a fire station - although I'm a former firefighter myself and every fire station alarm I'm familiar sounds like air raid style siren. This is more a doorbell musical melody being played.

Are there any churches or schools nearby with a campanile? I live near a private school and at 6PM the campanile bells sound in a musical chime.
