I ran into this situation last year, and almost had to spend the night outdoors somewhere in the park.

So I will be attending a boat cruise on a Friday in July at Captree State Park. The boat will return back to the park/dock at a few minutes before midnight. I will need to get back to a hotel near Merrick - or at least back to a LIRR station. I will be without a car. A car rental seems to be out of the question as I don't want to pay $75 for it. So I will use Uber to get to the park.

Now last year, when the boat returned to the park, I was barely able to get access to the internet on my phone. I use Ting which piggybacks on T Mobile I believe. I did connect to Uber but a couple times my request would not be accepted, sometimes it would time out, as well as possibly maybe my internet access stopped. After about 15-20 minutes I finally saw a driver grab my request. Other wise I think I would have been stuck there for the night. I did not have a number for a taxi - and not sure how they would want to come to the park from Long Island - as Captree State Park is way out there.

So what are your thoughts for this upcoming situation? Know of any taxis that will let me reserve a ride from the park late nite? One thing I can try - on the way there I can ask my Uber driver if they would be interested in picking me up late nite.

I am assuming that my phone is connecting to a tower that is back somewhere on Long Island - no towers on this island where the park is?

One note that I want to add. Last year, with the Uber driver on the way to the park - the driver was not sure exactly where the park was. So he totally relied on the location that Uber was giving him - which was a mile or two south of the actual location. I had never been there before but I had a map with me so I knew he has gone too far. After doing a uturn and getting stuck in stopped traffic for a long time, he dropped me off at the park after the boat had disconnected itself from the dock. Somehow they were still able to get me on the boat - even though I was at least 10 minutes late.

Let me know your thoughts and recommendations.

For starters I would get a better phone carrier before you get stranded ... it sounds like you have no car and the ability to have reliable communications from lots of areas sounds to me to be very important

If you are going back and forth from Merrick to Captree, it's probably worth it to get a cheap car rental. I don't know what Uber charges for that trip, but it's quite a distance.

Agreed.

Given the LISK buried bodies in Gilgo, I would wonder how many Uber drivers would feel compelled to accept a late night pick up in Captree.

$75 for a daily rental? Try not renting at the airport. Or, Priceline or Hotwire it (or something similar).

Just tried Enterprise and Kayak for car rentals. Cheapest price was $75 and $87 accordingly. For Friday for one day. These are for rental locations close by - not airport.

Have you tried Rent-a-Wreck? They're supposed to be less expensive.

Rent a car. $75 per day for a Friday in July is par for the course. I've spent about that in other cities during busy season. You will be a lot more at ease on your cruise too

Seems LIRR and Uber will cost a bit anyway. Subtract that from the car rental and it's prob worth the peace of mind and control. Drive Ocean Pkwy with your windows open all the way back to the Meadowbrook Pkwy to get to Merrick. The ride alone will make the rental worth the price.

Agreed. One of my favorite roads to drive to clear my head. I sometimes drive from the Meadowbrook to Robert Moses and back just to kill time on a nice night...
