Yes, may have already - I was told by someone at the town to just keep it open if you aren't selling anytime soon. Its far easier to reopen it then to get it restarted if I close it if I ever wanted to get the work done.

Is that true?

Probably depends on the Town. In some Towns that's true - not certain if all work that way.

Or were you referring to my idea of moving to an electric hot water heater?

I do currently have an open permit to finish the gas line but just pushed it off due to funds and other priority of work we need to keep the space liveable.

The issue sounds like you have an illegally finished basement, if the inspector sees that you have a finished basement it would immediately become a big issue with the town. My suggestion is to go to the town building records department (basement of buildings dept) and pull the plan/file to your house and see if the old owners legally finished the basement or not.

If its just the bathroom that is illegal, i would just lock the door and say its a closet.

If the entire thing was done without permit.. I wouldnt bother with involving the town. Look for a plumber that has dealt with this situation before. I guarantee someone else has had this issue. A lot of older homes from 50's-60's have finished basements done without permits.

If you know its illegal and want to make it legal, you'll need to fill out paperwork to legalize and maintain.

Thanks but I pulled the plans and I know its legal. They legally added an egress and finished the basement. All of the details such as town website and (last known) blue -prints for the basement show it being finished with walls and bathroom and location of "proposed" washer and dryer.
