And would only marginally add to the commute.
Where does your spouse work?

Elmont Schools, unlike Lynbrook, VS, or Franklin Square, offers prek. Make sure if you do buy in Elmont that you are not impacted by the new arena.

She works at the same facility, so we commute together.

The youngest one started kindergarten, so no concerns there and no plans of having a third kid. What new arena? lol

The massive new arena with over 500k of what will surely be empty retail space. Really just a back door way to get a casino here. In all seriousness, look into it. You do not want to buy a home anywhere near that future disaster.

You are making probably the biggest investment of your life - this needs to be more than darts at a map - do your due diligence and research what's going on around your future home - and what COULD go on.

[quote=nicolasl46;56346593]The problem is that I won't have anyone to look after my kids, so my mother will still look after them while we work and since she lives in the same school zone as I am, I will use her address instead. I know it doesn't make sense to pay school taxes an not use the schools, but what choice do I have? I'm not spending money on a sitter and as far as I can see, Nassau schools don't offer after school programs. I'm all ears, if you know something I don't
Having reliable, affordable child care is very important. keeping the commute as short as possible is also important when both parents work full time and the kids are commuting with them.
An organization called SCOPE runs before and after school programs in a number of school districts in Nassau County, but it's very expensive and often doesn't start early enough or end late enough to accommodate people commuting to Queens. Also the kids might find more warmth and relaxing environment with grandma and more personal attention.
Based on my experience, there is A LOT of heavy traffic at rush hour driving to and from the city line, and if you had to travel to Hicksville for example in eastern Nassau (as I did) you have to allow 60 mins to get from new Hyde park to Hicksville alone (plus another 30 mins from Flushing to NHP before you even reach the city line in the first place).
So my best advice is if you can afford something in Elmont, VS or Lynbrook and feel those areas are a good fit for your family, buy there. Lynbrook has highly regulated parking though -- including a law against parking (even your own car) on any street from 1 AM to 4 AM, and an extra layer of taxes at the village level.
Elmont is a decent community to raise a family. That town and most in the area also have some so-called "mother-and-daughter" homes (these are legal and have a separate apartment that is allowed to be occupied by a relative). I don't know if your mom rents or owns in Queens or whether she would want to move to LI, but it's another option.
