Not exactly an "independent store", but IKEA has some interesting toys - not surprising, since they are a European (Swedish) company. Could be worth a trip...

You know, I hadn't thought of that! I haven't been to IKEA since the early 2000s when my son had to furnish his college apartment. I didn't even realize that they have a toy department, actually.
I've always wondered why they only have the one store on LI though, even after all this time. You'd think they would have at least plopped one somewhere in Suffolk, LOL
Virginia Beach & Norfolk area used to have K&K Toys, but I think they folded back in the 9os. I assume it was too hard to compete with toy superstores like Toys R Us and Children's Palace.. which ironically/ultimately couldn't compete w/Wal*Mart and Amazon.
To my knowledge there r no independent toy stores left in southeastern Virginia, but I could be wrong. There r some comic book shops that have a lot of Star Wars stuff, etc, but..
Ps- I just noticed this was a thread specifically for Long Island toy shops, sorry..
Are there any remaining independent toy stores that might have stuff other than what's on the shelves at Target, K-Mart, or Babies-R-Us?
I seem to recall there used to be one on Rte 25A in St. James back in the 1980s; they had a mix of educational and imported (from England and Germany, not China) toys but they are long gone.
Any suggestions? Thanks!
BBC,
I know your looking for a store. However, I just received a huge toy store catalog from Amazon. Maybe something you can request online.
P.S. Ozzy says hello. Still can’t thank you (and still talk about) your recommendation!
Happy Holidays!
I rarely want help in a store, but when I'm looking for something special for a grandchild, I will ask and have always gotten good suggestions and a great gift.
Learning Tower Toys, on 347, in Port Jeff Station is great. The ladies that run it are very helpful.
