Hello,

So I'm doing Thanksgiving and will like to know where is the best place to purchase a turkey? Looking for organic. Nassau County

Thanks

Whole Foods?

I think there are a couple of turkey farms near Riverhead, but not sure if they are organic. I believe that there is only one organic vegetable farm on Long Island.

I second the suggestion for Whole Foods. Or Wild by Nature, although that's a smaller store/smaller selection; there's a Wild by Nature in Oceanside on Long Beach Rd. There's also one in West Islip if you're closer to eastern Nassau than western.

If you prefer a non-commercial turkey and don't mind going a bit into western Suffolk, I am pretty sure that the chickens and turkeys raised and sold by Makinajian Farm are organic. They sell organic produce and organic chicken feed so it seems logical that the birds they sell are also organically raised but call them to make sure.

I think the Natures Promise brand carried by Stop and Shop is organic. Worth checking out.

Not sure if they are still there, but consider Kerbers Natural Poultry on West Pulaski Road in Huntington/Cold Spring Harbor area. Close to Nassau line. Makinajian is also a quality micro-farm.

Everything from the earth is organic.......
Just because something is organic doesnt mean its good for you.

Makinajian acquired the Kerber location in 1981. In 2013 it was sold to a corporate entity. It's quite possible that Makinajian still has an interest in the business.
For a few years, nothing was happening at that location, but in 2017 and 2018 - with the help of some financing - they renovated and subsequently reopened, and it looks like business is doing well enough.
