LIRR had a pretty extensive list of construction projects that debuted this year. While construction itself entails some disruption, it's supposed to allow for better service in the future. Improvements include station rebuilds, raising of old and low train bridges that have had a history of truck collisions, preparations for a third-track at some parts (though preparations don't allow for an actual third track capacity increase), at-grade crossing eliminations, preparations electric substation replacement, and switch upgrades.

Here is the link for details: https://www.masstransitmag.com/rail/...ion-milestones

I suppose the really large improvement will come with LIRR increasing service and diverting part of them to Grand Central, though it's still a short-sighted mess to build two giant double-decked tunnels with a massive interlocking instead of a simpler single slightly smaller tunnel or two much smaller tunnels all the way down Manhattan and crossing the East River to through-run into Atlantic Terminal (which would then no longer be a terminal).

LMFAO. Increased service? The double track on ronkonkoma was completed a year ago, and not one extra train added. Total bll****.

Except the tunnel under the East River was already built in 60s....

Totally agree!! That Ronkonkoma line is the worst and it is getting more crowded every day. We got nothing out of that double track.

I've been on that recently, it stinks!

Is it true they want to put another stop at Republic? The last thing that line needs is another stop.

It’s the big LI mystery once again ....

Trains are packed to the gills, traffic is worse than ever, condos going up all over & houses flying off the market but everyone is moving?!?

Can someone solve this mystery?
