Existing people living and working in suffolk got fired/layoff/find new jobs - if plenty of choices are available in suffolk then its great - else it will also contribute to the traffic. Population increase = 0 but there is an increase in traffic.

We can argue the opposite - people finding jobs in suffolk and not commuting towards the city will wash out the increase above, but I really doubt this.
More traffic because of all the people who used to work one, 9-5 salaried job now working 2-3 PT hourly jobs.

Why is there less traffic when schools close during the year including the summer?

Because all the parents transporting their children are not out on the road, can't have them riding the bus..

No teachers, high schoolers, college students or administrators on the roads. And no parents.

Not to forget all the food trucks / transportation vehicles etc that support the day to day running of the schools in addition to what you mentioned.

Bwsteg, there is less traffic during the summer but still more then there used to be. I used to drive back and forth to Queens so I noticed an increase in summer traffic over the years. For some reason it seems worse in July, it does seem to die down more by August.

Twingles mentions some of the reasons for there traditionally to be less summer traffic. I would add more people take vacations during the summer too.

Have you tried to hire anyone recently? It's really hard to find people. Either people are afraid of changing companies or the unemployment is really low. We used to advertise positions and get stacks of resume, now things are much different, and I am hearing same things from others in different industries.

Then there are people who refuse to answer Census questionnaire honestly.

Regarding traffic, increased vehicles will be inevitable, what makes it worse is the lack of infrastructure. If NSP was 3 lanes instead of 2, or if there were more parking lots for LIRR, and reliable public transportation, traffic would be different.
Let's face it, manhattan wants to funnel the volume in outer boroughs. They don't want the load to hit the city, but actually flow slowly into city and be able to move around the city easily. This is why they took lanes off queens blvd, northern blvd, metropolitan ave, Atlantic, Flatbush etc in the name of bus lanes and bike lanes. Each major exit is packed after GCP/678 because merges are inefficient. Going back to LI, rush hour expanded into 3pm, I guess more and more people work odd hours, and with increased volume the congestion spread.

More people moving further east to get more for their money is a good observation that zulu400 pointed out. All those people have to drive, and that adds to the traffic.

I lol’d at some of these more traffic conspiracies.

Do you people not notice all the building that’s going on? You don’t see every single plot of land being turned into condos and apartments? These businesses don’t just build them to sit empty! They build them because they can charge $2300 a month for a 1 bedroom out here!

No conspiracies- apartments don’t create traffic cars do. You did not live on LI in the 1970s and ‘80s. There has been no increase in population but traffic is worse for all the reasons cited. I cannot think of one family I knew with more than two cars as a kid and as I said many had one. My mother was the ONLY working mother I can recall as a kid. And she was a nurse and worked part time. Now there are tons of two income families and many of not most teens have a car.

Twinkles if you really think there has been no population increase from 1970 to 2020 then I don’t know what to tell you. I live here. I drive here daily. I see the condos and housing developments being built one after another. Not sure how they gauge the population but I think they need a more accurate method.
