According to reports not all the kids were treated poorly. The girlfriend's 3 girls were fine. His youngest, boy, with no mention of autism or disabilities, apparently escaped his wrath. The question is why did he have full custody in the first place?
Thoughts:
1) He didn't want to pay child support, which would be huge for 3 kids on his salary. Per public records, Michael G. Valva, $85k base, $110K-ish with probable OT etc.
2)The girlfriend, Angela Pollina's facebook page says she "retired" from her job soon after she got "engaged" to this animal. That must have looked great to a judge. What was her contribution besides her child support & possible alimony?
3) He was a cop. The mom was an immigrant, possibly a stay at home, with no good earning capacity and easy to manipulate in court without expensive representation.
4) Where all his money came from to support that huge house, huge mortgage & LI taxes, plus 6 kids, is a mystery. He couldn't even afford to bury Thomas & had the chutzpah to put up a GoFundMe for funeral expenses.
Those people really disgust and anger me.
1. The mother of the murdered little boy was not a stay at home mom. She was a corrections officer at Riker's Island.
2. He didn't want to pay child support - you nailed that. He was a spiteful basta4d and no lover of children. Unfortunately, children with disabilities are "cash cows" in the eyes of the depraved. From what I have read, two of the boys had developmental disabilities. That could yield upwards of $4000 per moths from SSD.
That paid his mortgage. Or most of it.
3, Pollina lived off the animal and her abused stepson's disability checks. She is as disgusting as he is. She took care of HER OWN CHILDREN and participated in the abuse of those little boys.
4, Those boys should have been living with THEIR MOTHER. The cop should never have been a cop. He's a thug. A GoFundMe? Maybe the mother put that up. To my knowledge the monster is behind bars.
Look, I know cops and I know people who worked for CPS. CPS is understaffed and underpaid. I have no doubt about that. It's a thankless job. Nobody calls CPS "heroes" when they simply do their jobs correctly, because when they do their jobs correctly, people lose their kids. Can't say the same for PD's in Nassau and Suffolk. Not understaffed, not underpaid.
Edit: So everyone can take their outrage about CPS and put it to good use: Go sign up and do the job for few months.
We'll see how long you last.
Salary
The starting salary for a Child Protective Specialist Level I is $49,279. After successful completion of 6 months of service, you are automatically promoted to Child Protective Specialist Level II, with a base salary increase of $53,519. Upon successful completion of 18 months in this position, the base salary increases to $57,070 with a salary range up to $80,916. In addition to the base salary increases, there are longevity differentials, and the potential for overtime earnings and a night differential for certain assignments.
Can't rep you again. CPS workers are also college graduates. At least a BA is required. It's an importand and sometimes dangerous job.
And you are right, it's a thankless job, but cops are constantly praised as heroes.
Cops earn more. And get the respect. And get called "heroes". Not all cops are heroes by definition. I think that requiring at least a four year college degree NOT in criminal justice - in a more broad field - would help to weed out some of the very hyper, angry, impulsive and physical types.
How did he ever pass psychiatric screening? He is obviously a bully, a narcissist, and a sadist. Just the kind of person who should NOT be a cop.

His kids had mild autism and were going to regular school. not to mention there is strict parental income limits to collect SSI benefits based on a child. No way he would qualify. He’s an animal no doubt but it’s extremely unlikely he was collecting any SSI benefits on his kids.

Angela the stepmoster is just as bad, in my eyes.
In all seriousness, if they weeded out bullies narcissists and sadists or guys with little man syndrome, you'd lose half the current membership. Why is that every sytrofoam cup eating, weirdo harassing bully on my high school football team is now on a police force? Just coincidence?

My son once got into a fight with a girl at daycare, years ago when he was 4. Stupid kid stuff. I apologized to her and her mother as it was unacceptable, and had my son apologize as well.
A couple of months later I ran into the father for the first time (with his daughter) at a party for another classmate. He came up to me, called my son a bully, and then proceeded to bully and threaten me with violence in front of my son and his daughter (setting a great example). It didn't surprise me to find out he joined the NYPD a while later.

Thee are 100 case workers in Suffolk monitoring 1000 children in addition to 9000 abuse cases that need to be investigated. No authority and lack of case workers is a recipe for disaster in addition to many parents with children that should never be parents. This is the case that made the news, how many more are out there.
Cops are not heroes just because they are cops and for the simple reason they are cops.
A cop can be a hero because they just happen to be a decent human being and coincidentally, a cop. They just don't automatically deserve hero status because they have a badge.

Nypd will take anyone. Your eligible raising a son who’s fighting women probably gets it from your example at home.
Cps and the judge seem to be responsible with the few details that are in the news currently
