Hello. I am wondering if anyone has experience using the evaluation of foreign credentials as a pathway to NYS teacher certification. I have a masters in teaching (which including a student teaching component) from Spain that is currently in process of being accredited by WES. If anyone knows, what has been your experience with this pathway? What did you still have to do to reach certification afterwords? Is it likely for a foreign degree to be counted as a NYS teacher preparation program? Thank you!

This really isn't a Long Island question. You should probably post this in the Education or New York State forum.

There are several tests that you have to take, including videos of you teaching a group of students, before you can get certified. Since you didn't go to school here, I'd advise taking a couple of prep courses first. Preparing the videos and accompanying documents can be very time consuming. New York State requires a master's degree so it's good that you have one. There are also several New York State seminars that you need as well, but it's just money, they aren't difficult. Just google New York State Office of Teaching Initiatives and look for the information that you need. You can also contact them via email or phone. New York State does things very differently than other states so I wouldn't bother unless you are serious about teaching here. Each state evaluates foreign transcripts differently.

Everything is done through the State's TEACH website. All of the certification pathways and requirements are there. Good luck. It's very aggravating and a lot of red tape.

TEACH Resources: TEACH System :OTI:NYSED Click on the "Certification" tab.
