I want to put up a $500 shed that I bought at Lowes in my yard and was wondering if I needed a permit. I know I can call the town, but I wanted to see if anyone had a quick and easy answer for me. The shed is roughly 8' by 6' and apparently can be put up and taken down easily (according to the box), so it would not be a permanent fixture in my yard.

Well, It depends. Sounds small enough not to require one. Most accessory structures need to be 10 feet off the property line which probably puts it in the middle of the back yard.

IMO, if its that small, just put it up, you should be fine.

FYI, this is probably the only situation I would say not to get a permit

I'm with KB. Thats what I did. I didn't do the 10ft setback. I did make sure it was on my property and probably a definate 3ft setback.

Three feet was what I was told...although I'm in North Hempstead.

In town of Hempstead, permits are required for all sheds. It is relatively easy to file for a shed permit and will cost under $200 if you get the permit before you build it. The set back is 2' from the side and rear except if it is a corner house it must be 2' & 2' from the inward corner.

Can I take down a dilapidated detached garage and replace it with a shed without informing the town??

Since it comes down easily just do it. You can then simply take it down if you have to.

Do you need a permit? Up to you. Does the town require one? Yes.
