It is true that flu has essentially identical symptoms (fever, cough, body aches, fatigue and congestion or runny nose; sometimes vomiting and diarrhea) and essentially identical modes of transmission to Covid-19.

They both cause respiratory disease, which presents as a wide range of illness from asymptomatic or mild through to severe disease and death. Both can be spread by an infected person for several days before their symptoms appear. Also, good hygiene and social distancing and face coverings slow the spread of both. And both are deadly (particularly for the elderly and those with compromised conditions).

It is also true that LI folks have essentially stopped dying of Covid-19 related illnesses and our test positivity number (FWIW) is well under 1% for Covid -19. But flu season is right around the corner. And there may be another wave of Covid. And there is always another wave of flu.

It appears that kids are more significant spreaders of flu than they are of Covid although that is still being investigated and it appears Flu is more deadly for kids but that too is still being investigated. In any case, to stop the spread of flu (and Covid) kids in school should practice good hygiene, social distancing, and face coverings.

Like the various strains of the flu, Covid will be with us for quite a while.

But, the flu virus and the Covid-19 viruses are two different viruses. Without a test the two illnesses may appear identical.
