That argument may work when looking at the Senate and POTUS. However, House seats are just as important for the GOP. For instance, a lot of NY State actually has Republican representation (even on Long Island with Peter King and Lee Zeldin). They cannot risk pissing off the folks who vote Republican in these locales for fear of giving up more Congressional seats. The split of both the Senate and House is very tenuous as it is...

The Fed is just adding zeros to the national debt so what is another few hundred billion to bail out States and Localities?

There is a whopping 6 GOP seats in NYS. That’s not a lot and could easily be made up by taking back a lot of the “blue dog” dem seats back in the next mid term election. Not to mention the GOP would not just automatically lose all those seats just because McConnell won’t bail out NY either.

And I agree what’s the difference anymore Debt wise? It’s all just politics at this point.

GOP is down 34 seats right now. Every seat counts. I hope you are right but I suspect they will not risk it.

Unless they move public pensions and health care to a defined benefit across the board as most of us have (will never happen), mathematically they could forgive all of NY debt tomorrow and we would be visiting this problem again in less than a decade (in normal circumstances, let along the direction NY has been heading). Particularly as the current crop of six figure salaried employees we have now punch out and go to Florida with their NY benefits. Nothing at all against the individual workers, but we have the reality of math to deal with. Before the pandemic, we were at the point that the majority of your state and local taxes (outside of social programs) went to benefits, not to paving roads, lighting, cleaning parks, current employee salaries, infrastructure etc. It gets even worse considering rates have been artificially pushed close to zero which makes long term investments for the retirement system even riskier, since the NY tax payer is liable for increases, bailouts and maintaining a rate of return far above what safe investments will yield. With no change to the underlying system, any "fix" is a short term band-aid (great for current office holders who can punt the problem down the line) but will bring greater pain to residents in the not too distant future.

Debt is just a concept for the Feds, UNTIL they try to do something about it, like devalue the currency. That's how Argentina does it. That's when the guns will come out and people will be looking to salt and pepper the rich to eat for sunday supper. When their billion is worth a million, they'll survive. When our $1000 is worth a $20, we won't.

The feds should give zero dollars to the democratic hacks who run new York. Trump saved and bailed out Cuomo during covid and the two faced rat goes on national TV and said he did nothing to help dementia Biden get relected.

Cuomo failed to do his job by ordering the vents and Trump saved his rear end by having thousands delivered in record time. Then the snake stabs him in the back.

We are on our way to being the next Weimar Republic.

Wait, I forgot. Who's been president during this time of racial strife, a disaster pandemic response, mass unemployment, and printing checks for everybody and their sister? It seems like people on this board made Cuomo president and forgot that it's in fact Vlad's puppet who's president; the man who SHOULD be taking responsibility. Sorry folks, but when you elected a clown, you should've expected a circus... And here we are!

Lol and you think any democrat you would have voted for wouldn’t be printing checks right now?? You kidding me? Say what you want about trump but he NEVER pretended to care about the national debt. And stop with the putin nonsense that’s so 2017. Give it a rest.
