Put a camera in the area before you call them, and compare that with how on oil burner should be cleaned, per the manufacturer.
You might be surprised, really surprised..
Worth a $900 premium/year, to burn even more oil with a dirty burner?
Interesting..
Annual tuneup includes new filter, new nozzle and cleaning of the electrode and the boiler (maybe). Some include a combustion test as well (only seen it done once). $14 in parts and an hour of your time at most at a 4 out of 10 effort and tech knowledge, nothing Youtube cannot help with.
What exactly were you expecting?
The $900 premium includes peace of mind though that if it new year's eve and your boiler stops working, someone will come to fix it without a $300 holiday fee so don't get all flustered, some do COD and are comfortable working on their boiler and some would rather leave it to the Pros.
I used to get the annual cleanings. Every year I'd ask them if it was dirty. They always said no. One guy called it "an exercise in futility".
The company only did the cleanings during non-heating season, and one guy even admitted it was to keep them employed during the summer.
Weird premise. There is no "annual cleaning." It's a tune up. Blow out the lines, change burner nozzle and parts, check for leaks and pressure situations, vacuum, etc. The point is do it in the warm months so your burner will run correctly in the cold ones and you don't end up competing for service with "no heat" calls which will be taken first.
I’ll add to that... do you really think a oil burner service company wants to mess with the oil burner settings just so you burn an extra gallon of fuel a month? lol. That’s nonsense. When it becomes an issue it costs them $200 just to send a van back to your house to fix it.
When we had oil, I'd always stand around in the area for the 30 minutes they were working. Too many experiences & stories of people in every industry not actually doing the work. And it's not like I had anything pressing to do if I'm calling a guy in.
